Decamethylferrocene (A) (4.80 g, 14.7 mmol) was placed in a round bottomed flask equipped with a magnetic stirrer bar. Fresh finely ground barium manganate (18.77 g, 73.6 mmol, 5 eq) was then added to the flask. The solids were then suspended in a mixture of dry benzene (20 cm3) and drydiethyl ether (20 cm3). The flask was then sealed and placed under a nitrogen atmosphere. The dark blue slurry was then sonicated for 45 mins. After this time the flask was removed from the sonicater and heated at 45 C for 16 hours. After this time the dark slurry was filtered through a pad of celite and the solids washed with EtOAc (250 cm3) until the washings ran clear. The red solution was then concentrated in vacuo to give a red solid.
