This work focuses on the investigation of the very early stages of the degradation of coil-coated galvanized steel sheet through swelling and blistering during exposure to chloride-containing aqueous solutions and the possible effect of the zinc-based metallic coating on the degradation at these very early stages. Three types of coil-coated steel whose difference was in the zinc-based metallic coating, namely galvanized, galfan and aluzinc, were considered. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) operating in the feedback mode was employed to image topographic changes when the samples were left at their spontaneous open circuit potential. Swelling of the coating and nucleation of blisters were observed for all the samples when they were exposed to naturally aerated 0.1 M KCl solution within 24 h exposure. Conversely, featureless and flat surfaces were found when the samples were either exposed to 0.1 M K2SO4 or to 10 mM KCl. For chloride concentrations of 0.1 M and above the chloride ions were observed to promote coating degradation nearly immediately upon immersion in the electrolyte.

A highly efficient synthesis of optically active ferrocenylethylamines via hydride reduction of chiral ferrocenylketimines

A new chiral ferrocene-labelled tyrosine PNA monomer 1 has been synthesised in good yield in both racemic and enantiomerically pure forms. It is suitable for insertion in various positions of PNA oligomers, a possibility that has been preliminarily demonstrated by synthesising the dimer 16. Moreover, in view of possible applications to nucleic acid detection, a preliminary voltammetric investigation on the electrochemical activity of monomer 1 and its synthetic precursors has been carried out in DMF. It appears that, despite the bulkiness of the PNA monomer backbone, its insertion on the ferrocene group only moderately lowers the latter’s diffusion coefficients and peak currents, thus affording voltammetric detection limits in the order of 10-6-10 -7 M.

Determination of serum glucose using flow injection analysis and highly selective glucose sensor based on composite films

A novel flow injection analysis (FIA) system suitable for measurements of glucose in blood serum is developed. In the proposed FIA system, a new kind of glucose sensor based on composite polymer films and well-immobilized enzyme was fabricated. An electrochemical technique of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used for the characterization of the newly fabricated biosensor. A wide linear range of 0.1-50 mM for glucose detection was reported in virtue of the new configuration of the sensor and the developed FIA system. The reproducibility of signals was quite good with relative standard deviation (RSD) values for n = 4 injections (typically 5.7%). Animal blood serum was directly injected and assayed in this simulative physiological system. Good analytical recovery of glucose spiked into serum samples, with recoveries in the range of 96.7-105.0%, was exhibited. Under optimized conditions, detection of serum glucose for normal people and diabetics using our proposed method is possible.

Nanoparticle-mediated intervalence transfer

Nanoparticle-mediated intervalence transfer was reported with ferrocene moieties that were attached onto the ruthenium nanoparticle surface by ruthenium-carbene pi bonds. The resulting particles exhibited two pairs of voltammetric waves with a potential spacing of about 200 mV and a rather intense absorption peak in the near-infrared range (?1930 nm) at mixed valence. Both features suggested Class II characteristics of the intraparticle intervalence transfer that mainly arose from through-bond interactions between the metal centers. Quantum calculations based on density functional theory showed that the nanoparticle core electrons served as conducting band states for the effective charge delocalization between particle-bound ferrocene moieties.
